GLENDALE – Arizona State football running back Cam Skattebo has been one of the most polarizing prospects during this draft cycle. Skattebo is a throwback, hardnose halfback with questions on whether he can hang in today’s NFL. Regardless, many teams, including the Arizona Cardinals, have seen the Sun Devil’s raw ability and are willing to take a flyer on him.
Fanduel has listed the top six favorites to draft Skattebo, who is currently projected to be a late-round three or early-round four selection. Arizona is on the list to keep Skattebo in the Valley.
Cardinals had a Top 30 visit with Skattebo early in the draft process, and the ASU back mentioned that he had an unofficial visit with the team. During his senior campaign, Skattebo was top five in Heisman voting, leading the Sun Devils to the College Football playoffs and rushing for over 1,700 yards.
During the combine, scouts became skeptical of Skattebo, as he only participated in two drills. Despite being impressive in both drills, the 5’11 running back had questions surrounding his possible 40-yard dash time. Later, at ASU Pro Day, Skattebo ran a 4.65, which would rank him last for running backs at the NFL combine.
Despite the lackluster 40-yard-dash time, teams are intrigued with the raw ability and versatility Skattebo brings to the football field. The Cardinals had one of the best rushing attacks last year with James Conner, a similar halfback to Skattebo.
A reunion to keep a Skattebo in the Valley would make him an easy fan favorite on day one, and the Cardinals have an opportunity to do that with their 78th and 115 overall picks to draft the Sun Devil.
