A whole slew of things have to go right for Central Michigan to get to the MAC Championship, and losing to Western Michigan a few weeks ago didn’t help.
However, it beat Buffalo, so if it can get by Kent State and take down Toledo, it’ll get thrown into the crazy tie-breaker abyss, but at least it’ll still be alive.
Meanwhile, Kent State is actually winning college football games. It hadn’t beaten an FBS team since the end of the 2022 season, and was 2-27 overall until it finally broke the run against UMass.
Now the Golden Flashes have won three of their last five, and if they win this and beat Northern Illinois, they’ll be bowl eligible for the first time since 2021.

The Chippewa passing game has figured it out.
It wasn’t bad throughout the year, but it wasn’t great at keeping things moving. However, Joe Labas is hitting everything over the last three weeks.
They don’t throw much - the ground game gets it done - but Labas is hitting 72% of his throws.
Kent State is 0-6 this season when allowing teams to complete 55% or more of their passes. Central Michigan has yet to complete fewer than 55% in any game. However …
Central Michigan is 1-4 when teams complete more than 60% their passes against its secondary. Kent State can do that.
This is hardly the Greatest Show on Turf, but it’s a crazy-simple equation. When the offense is producing just a little bit, the team wins.
The Chippewa run defense has allowed over 100 yards in every FBS game except for the win over San Jose State, and that’s because the Spartans were too busy throwing.
Kent State won’t be great on the ground, but it just has to be functional.
Meanwhile …
Can Kent State hit its passes?
Again with the completion percentage. Kent State is 4-1 when it hits 60% or better, and 0-5 when it doesn’t. The problem, though, is that the Central Michigan offense will be just a little bit better when it has to be.
Neither team will move the ball easily, but the Chippewas will be a bit more consistent.
