This week, former hoops star and longtime NBA analyst Charles Barkley issued an extremely bold proclamation on what he expects out of Deion Sanders‘ college coaching career.

Barkley joined The Next Round this week to discuss various topics, including college football and the man who has dominated headlines through four weeks: Coach Prime. That’s when Barkley offered his aggressive take on Sanders.

“Oh I think he will definitely win a National Championship somewhere,” Chuck asserted, even though Colorado is still outmatched by bigger programs from a talent perspective right now.

“He don’t even have his own players yet, you know. And first of all, that game was the easiest game to bet in the history of college football. I mean, as much as I love Deion…” Barkley began to say in reference to the Oregon game but stopped.

“And listen, I wanna choose my words very wisely, because I know there’s going to be some (jackrabbit) that tries to turn my words around.”

Not on this website, Chuck! So, without any further comment, let’s hear what Barkley had to say about Coach Sanders in regards to his name getting thrown around for the Auburn job before he landed at Colorado.

“I mean, obviously you guys know publicly and privately I wanted Deion to get the Auburn job, 100%. That being said, he didn’t get the job, so I’m 100% behind Coach Freeze. We’ve had a couple conversations. I’m a Freeze guy, I’mma ride or die with him.”

Despite not landing at his alma mater, Barkley is still a huge Sanders fan and admires him as a leader and molder of young men.

“First of all, he’s a wonderful person. Let me tell you something: any coach who has control over a young black man and he tells them, ‘No. 1, I’m gonna sneak up on you in class, if you’re not in the first two rows, I’m gonna run you, because my job is to make you graduate. If you’re not sitting in the front two rows, I’m gonna run you. If I catch you walking around with your pads hanging down below your (rear end), I’m gonna run you into the ground.’

“He gonna create men,” Barkley added, “I mean, obviously he wants to win, but he’s going to create grown men and that’s why I love the guy.” Charles then noted that he definitely does not want to see Coach Prime take over an SEC school and start competing against his Tigers.

“Once he start recruiting, man — I don’t know if it’s going to be in Colorado, I’ll be honest with you. And him coming to the SEC, I’ll tell you that, right now, that’s my worst nightmare. Because if he screw around and get to one of these warm weather climates, the rest is going to be history.”

Charles Barkley is certainly bullish on Deion Sanders and his future as a head coach.
