Chicago Bears Give Williams More Help With Odunze At Nine
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears give their number one overall pick Caleb Williams, more help. They select Rome Odunze with the ninth overall pick.

Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Poles continues to develop the offense. After hiring a new offensive staff and adding a lot of firepower, he continued to add to the offense. With the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, he selected quarterback Caleb Williams.

He stayed with the offensive theme with the ninth overall pick. He selected wide receiver Rome Odunze. Williams had a huge smile when he was announced as the first pick. After hearing the Odunze pick, that smile had to get bigger.

Odunze measures 6-foot-2, and weighs 212 pounds. He has the body to bully defensive backs. His body control is incredible. He can shield the defender from the ball and outjump him. Additionally, he has strong hands, allowing him to make catches away from his body.

With his strength and ball skills, Odunze can make incredible contested catches. Then he becomes dangerous gaining yards after the catch. That makes up for his lack of elite speed.

Odunze gives the Chicago Bears a fearsome trio with D.J. Moore and Keenan Allen. Throw in tight ends Cole Kmet and Gerald Everett, and running back D’Andre Swift, and Williams will have an embarrassment of riches on the field.

With his skills, Odunze will require attention. That creates space for Moore and Allen. Furthermore, his size and strength give the Chicago Bears another big target in the red zone. In college, Williams had an incredible 46:1 touchdown to interception ratio. While he may not repeat that performance at the pro level, he could still be very successful with all his targets.

Some may question why the Chicago Bears would select another wide receiver. They feel that grabbing an edge rusher is a more pressing need. However, there is a question with Allen. He is 32 and near the end of his career. The 2024 season is the final one in his contract. He could be a one-and-done.

If that happens, Odunze would make a perfect replacement. He can be a WR1 but doesn’t need to come in and carry an offense. Once Allen leaves, the Bears will still have a great duo in Moore and Odunze. Should Moore ever leave, they will still have a WR1 on the roster with Odunze.

Odunze will be fun to watch. He will make great contested catches and turn short passes into long gains. Moreover, he has an incredible work ethic. His teammates and coaches at Washington laud that work ethic. He is constantly looking to improve. He will quickly become a fan favorite.

Poles has set up an incredible offensive machine in 2024. This might be the greatest offense in franchise history. Willams may perhaps become the first Chicago Bears quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards. Odunze will be a key contributor right away.

It will be fun to watch Williams and Odunze develop together. Seeing that duo grow and score a ton of points could result in the Chicago Bears taking the NFC North and not giving it back like Poles said he wanted.
