Chicago Red Stars, NWSL to Compete in New Tournament with Liga MX Femenil This Summer

The Chicago Red Stars’ schedule just became more congested, but they'll now host at least two more home games in 2024. The National Women’s Soccer League and Liga MX Femenil announced on Wednesday that there will be an in-season tournament in 2024 featuring clubs from both North American leagues.

All 14 NWSL clubs and six Liga MX Femenil sides will participate in the tournament that’s been dubbed the “NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup,” which will begin on July 19 with group play. There will be 33 matches played overall and 30 matches in group play before the semifinals the week of Aug. 4. The final will take place the weekend of Oct. 25-27.

The four semifinal spots will be determined by which four teams finish the group stage with the most points.

The Red Stars, placed in Group D with NWSL sides Gotham FC and Washington Spirit and Liga MX Femenil’s Chivas de Guadalajara, will begin their tournament on July 20 in Bridgeview.

Chicago's group stage fixtures:

July 20: Red Stars vs. Gotham FC; SeatGeek Stadium, 5:00 PM CT

July 26: Red Stars vs. Chivas de Guadalajara; SeatGeek Stadium, 7:00 PM CT

July 31: Red Stars vs. Washington Spirit; Location TBD, 6:30 PM CT
