The battle for the top spot in Super Rugby Pacific comes down to a showdown this Saturday between the Waikato Chiefs and Canterbury Crusaders in Christchurch. Both teams are tied on points, with the Chiefs having a slight edge in points difference.
The Chiefs, aiming to rebound from a 35-17 defeat to the Hurricanes, welcome back All Blacks playmaker Damian McKenzie, returning from a hand injury. Additionally, Wallace Sititi, World Rugby's breakout player of 2024, is set for his first start of the season at number eight.
Chiefs coach Clayton McMillan said in a press statement, "The Crusaders are a class team, have a formidable record at home, and look back to their best. We're really looking forward to locking horns. We got taught a lesson last week, and we haven't shied away from that."
The Crusaders, who missed last season's finals, return to form with key players Braydon Ennor and Sevu Reece back. Young flyhalf Rivez Reihana replaces the injured Taha Kemara, with veteran James O'Connor on the bench.
In a press statement, Crusaders coach Rob Penney said, "The Chiefs will be disappointed in their performance last week, and we expect them to come out firing. It's going to be a massive challenge, but one we're ready for."
The match could have significant playoff implications. The Brumbies could overtake the loser if they beat the Force. The Blues, Reds, and Hurricanes also remain in contention.
With only a few rounds remaining, the Chiefs and Crusaders clash could determine who enters the finals with momentum and home-ground advantage. The pressure is on both squads to deliver.
