Chiefs' Juju Smith-Schuster Reveals The Why In Receiver Mentorship

The Kansas City Chiefs will enter the 2025 season with many doubting their ability to bounce back from the disastrous Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

But armed with a host of veterans who can help steady the ship, doubt the Chiefs at your peril.

One such veteran is receiver Juju Smith-Schuster, who is seen as the elder statesman of the room, and with the Chiefs having a handful of young receivers, headlined by Xavier Worthy, Juju has been helping the room get acclimated to the rigors of NFL football.

But why?

“I think naturally I'm a people's person so I know to help out the guys, especially learning plays, studying plays,” Smith-Schuster said. “I remember when I was a rookie and some of the older guys took time out of their day who had family, who had things going on, to spend time with them. So yeah, throughout camp I would spend an hour after practice or after meetings, with the younger guys just trying to get them to get their plays down because man, this is their livelihood, man.

"They've been playing football since they were kids. So for them, the more they can get out of a veteran, it's nice to help them out because I know it goes a long way, not just for them, but for the future. So yeah, it is very important to help out those guys.”

With players like Jalen Royals, Nikko Remigio, and a host of young players looking to make a name for themselves, Juju has been a sounding board for them as they navigate their way through the preseason.

Granted, being a mentor like Smith-Schuster isn't everyone's cup of tea, sometimes with players more worried about their own success, but it is clear Juju wants to give back and help bring along the next wave of Chiefs receivers.

And who knows, given how injuries have plagued the position in recent times, maybe Smith-Schuster's mentorship will help one player take their chance when it is presented.
