Kansas City Chiefs rookie DE Ashton Gillotte stacked back-to-back preseason games with standout performances in different phases of the game.

The third-round draft pick out of Louisville has been stacking good days throughout training camp and building off each passing preseason performance. In preseason Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, Gillotte caught the attention of Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub, who described him with a word that might soon become his nickname.

"I thought (Ashton) Gillotte really played great on special teams," Toub said after preseason Week 2. "He had three tackles on special teams, he had a knockdown block. He’s an animal out there."

Well, Gillotte brought the animal out again during preseason Week 3 against the Chicago Bears, but this time it was on the defensive side of the ball for Steve Spagnuolo . This mostly came during the early goings of the third quarter, working against Bears OT Theo Benedet. There was a four-play sequence where Gillotte basically wrecked the game for Chicago on three of those plays. It started with this play, where Gillotte timed the snap count and knifed his way into the backfield untouched for a three-yard tackle for loss.

The following play resulted in a five-yard delay of game penalty, which may or may not have been caused by Spags showing blitz. However, the two subsequent plays demonstrate that Gillotte can take over against a favorable matchup. Unfortunately for Gillotte, it's the preseason for NFL officials, too. The best pass rush of his young NFL career resulted in a questionable roughing the passer penalty.

On the ensuing play, you could tell that Gillotte simply wasn't going to be denied his glory. He blew up the run in the backfield for a two-yard tackle for loss in a play that looked a lot like Aaron Donald's double-tackle vs. Duke. He took the tight end and the left tackle for a ride to meet the running back in the backfield.

That three-play sequence represents what Gillotte's all about — relentless effort, motor, and winning with sheer force of will. According to the folks at Pro Football Focus, Gillotte was the sixth-highest graded defender in Kansas City for preseason Week 3. He generated a hurry and two defensive stops, notching the highest defensive grade (68.3) of his three preseason appearances thus far. Gillotte even managed a few repetitions with the starting defense for Friday's preseason Week 3 game. It's a sign of things to come, as he further settles into a rotational role in Kansas City.
