Recently retired veteran NFL linebacker C.J. Mosley spent the final two years of his career with Aaron Rodgers at the New York Jets. Mosley knows exactly how to ruin his debut with his new team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Aaron Rodgers era at the New York Jets was not a successful one, and they parted ways in the offseason to go down a different path.
Rodgers is now with the Pittsburgh Steelers to kick off his 21st season in the NFL, while the Jets are entrusting QB1 duties to former Chicago Bears and Steelers quarterback Justin Fields.
In a twisted turn of fate, or fortunate depending on perspective, the Jets host the Steelers in Week One, with Rodgers set to return to MetLife at the very first opportunity.
Former Jets and Baltimore Ravens linebacker C.J. Mosley has explained the key to disrupting Rodgers’ rhythm, which he learned after two years of training opposite him.
Aaron Rodgers is set to face old teammates like Sauce Gardner next Sunday, with whom he struck up a great relationship, but they know how to beat him better than most now.
C.J. Mosley was one of those teammates, and while Mosley has now left the Jets, he was still keen to share what he knew about facing Rodgers.
Speaking with Kay Adams on the Up and Adams show, Mosley said, “Keep him off his feet. If his feet are set, or obviously if they know what you’re running, it’s going to be a long day.
“If they’re getting that rhythm, it’s going to be a long day. So for the defense, for the Jets, just making sure they’re showing great coverage.
“Making sure they’re not, you know, giving it away, a linebacker’s moving too early because he’s going to know everything.

“The line just got to get to work, keep him off his feet, make him throw those passes overhead so they can pick them off or check downs and, you know, get some tips and overthrows. Got to get those.”
On the need for pressure: “Yeah, definitely, definitely get him up there. I mean, if the D line can get the pressure without taking away linebackers and safeties, I mean, that would be a beautiful day.
“But yes, definitely mixing it up because like I say, he’s seen it all year 20, whatever, 20 plus years. So he’s seen everything.
“So it’s about the defense staying connected, getting off the field, and most importantly, stopping the run.”
Excluding the 2023 season, where Rodgers only played four snaps before his year was over due to a ruptured Achilles, his falloff since his MVP season has been considerable.
The four-time MVP winner was signed by Mike Tomlin for his leadership, but his performance output will have to significantly improve if he is to show the Jets it was their problem, not his.
Season | Attempts | Completions | Yards | TDs | Interceptions |
2021 – MVP | 366 | 531 | 4115 | 37 | 4 |
2022 | 350 | 542 | 3695 | 26 | 12 |
2024 | 368 | 584 | 3897 | 28 | 11 |
In his two past full seasons, in a very uncharacteristic fashion, Rodgers has thrown 13 interceptions, which is the amount he threw in three seasons at the Green Bay Packers between 2019 and 2021.
Rodgers’ revenge tour in 2025 also includes a return to the Packers, but the Super Bowl winner doesn’t have anything to prove when they come to Heinz Field.
There will be plenty of eyes on Week One to see if Rodgers and the Steelers were a match made in heaven, or whether the legendary quarterback’s decline is accurate.
