Clemson will take the field Saturday at Georgia Tech in a look fans haven’t seen in nearly two decades.
Instead of their standard road whites, the Tigers are breaking out purple jerseys paired with orange helmets and white pants, a combination last worn in 2008 against Maryland.
The twist comes thanks to Georgia Tech’s traditional home uniform choice. The Yellow Jackets are one of just two FBS programs, along with LSU, that regularly wear white at home.
Tech announced earlier in the week it would stick with its annual “Whiteout” theme, meaning Clemson couldn’t wear its usual road whites.
Instead, the Tigers went with a rare alternate: purple tops over white pants, accented by the iconic orange helmet.
It’s a striking look Clemson fans immediately recognized. The program hasn’t worn purple on the road since 2003—also against Georgia Tech, in a game the Tigers won 39-3.
More recently, purple jerseys have typically been reserved for Clemson’s annual Military Appreciation Day in November, a nod to the Purple Heart.
This weekend’s twist on tradition sparked buzz across social media Friday and Saturday as images of the uniforms surfaced.
Many fans called it one of Clemson’s sharpest alternates, celebrating its return after 17 years away from game action.
No. 12 Clemson (1-1) will put the uniform to the test in its ACC opener against unbeaten Georgia Tech (2-0).
Kickoff is set for noon at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta, with the Tigers listed as a slight 2.5-point favorite.
