Cleveland Browns Cut Quarterback From Roster on Sunday

The Cleveland Browns wrapped up their preseason on Saturday and now enter the toughest stretch of the offseason — cutting the roster down to 53 players by Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.

This process accelerates quickly after the preseason finale, and Sunday was no exception as teams across the league began making moves.

For Cleveland, one of the most intriguing quarterback situations in the NFL took another turn as the team announced the release of Tyler Huntley, who was signed just prior to their Week 1 preseason game.

"Browns are releasing quarterback Tyler Huntley, per source," ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday. "Cleveland has been planning to keep its other four QBs — Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders — on its 53-man roster."

Despite Huntley’s release, head coach Kevin Stefanski still intends to keep four quarterbacks on the active roster — a rare approach in today’s NFL.

Veteran Joe Flacco has been named the starter, while Kenny Pickett (who missed the preseason due to injury), Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders are all expected to be available for Week 1 when Cleveland hosts the Cincinnati Bengals.

Tyler Huntley was widely expected to be the odd man out, but his resume suggests he won’t be without opportunities for long. His experience as a reliable backup with both the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins could make him an appealing target for teams seeking depth under center ahead of the season.

With the Browns this preseason, Huntley threw for 129 yards and a touchdown. Prior to that, he spent four seasons in Baltimore as Lamar Jackson’s backup, even starting a 2022 Wild Card Round playoff game against the Bengals while Jackson was sidelined.

Last year in Miami, Huntley appeared in five games while Tua Tagovailoa was injured, posting 829 passing yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions, and adding two rushing scores.
