Colin Cowherd Just Obliterated the SEC

Colin Cowherd didn’t hold back on Friday, taking a direct shot at the SEC during his show on FS1. In the middle of a segment about college football’s shifting power balance, Cowherd dropped the kind of line that sticks: “The SEC, formerly known as the dominating college football conference… it looks like the Mountain West with bigger stadiums. That’s what I see.”

Now, Cowherd’s never been shy about stirring the pot, but this one landed differently. The SEC’s been the measuring stick for college football for the better part of two decades. National titles, top‑10 finishes, and NFL Draft dominance have all backed that up. But this year, the results haven’t exactly matched the brand.

For the third straight season, the SEC won’t have a team in the national title game. That alone is enough to raise eyebrows. Toss in a rough postseason that saw some of the league’s top teams fall flat, and the gap between the SEC’s reputation and its on‑field performance is starting to show. Cowherd didn’t invent that narrative, but he threw gasoline on it.

Calling the SEC the Mountain West with more seats isn’t subtle, and that’s the point. It’s a dig that hits because there’s a little truth behind it. The league didn’t pass the eye test this year. Georgia got bounced early. Alabama looked human. Ole Miss was the SEC’s last remaining hope and they ran into Miami and got beat.

Meanwhile, other leagues have stepped up. The Big Ten is playing for another title. The Big 12 just sent a first‑year member to the Playoff. The ACC has a National Title contender. People are noticing the shift, and Cowherd just said what a lot of fans and media types have been thinking for a while.

This isn’t about saying the SEC is done or irrelevant. That’d be a reach, but the automatic dominance? The built-in respect before a down is played? That part’s starting to fade, and when someone like Cowherd calls it out on national TV, it hits a little harder.

Whether the SEC bounces back next season or not, one thing’s clear: the days of giving them the benefit of the doubt might be over.
