A senseless act of violence this past Friday resulted in the death of Henderson State basketball player Jamarion Brown.
According to a report from KLTV, the authorities responded to a shooting at a pool party in east Camp County. Brown was taken to a nearby hospital due to a gunshot wound to the head. Unfortunately, immediate treatment couldn't save his life. Two others were injured in this shooting.
Henderson State University confirmed this week that Brown died at the young age of 23.
"It is with deep sadness that Henderson State Athletics mourns the death of junior men’s basketball student-athlete Jamarion Brown," the university said. "Jo spent just one season in Arkadelphia, but his impact on our campus was profound."
Brown's obituary described him as a "shining light to all who knew him, remembered for his warm spirit, deep commitment to family, and passion for basketball."
Henderson State men's basketball coach Jimmy Elgas is understandably devastated by this tragedy.
"No words can express our sadness for Jamarion’s family, friends, and teammates," Elgas said. "We lift them all up in prayer. Jo’s impact was felt not only on the basketball court, but throughout the fabric of Henderson State University, and we all grieve together. His loss leaves a tremendous void on our campus, but Jo will be remembered and honored in our hearts forever."
Brown averaged 6.5 points per game for Henderson State University this past season.
Our thoughts are with Brown's loved ones.
