Biff Poggi has been relieved of his duties as Charlotte's head coach, but he still decided to show up to practice one last time on Tuesday.
The 49ers fired Poggi on Monday after a fourth straight loss, sending Charlotte's record to 3-7. Overall, he posted a 6-16 record, with the 49ers finishing 3-9 last season.
"I am thankful to Biff Poggi for his leadership and mentorship of our student-athletes over these past two seasons," athletic director Mike Hill said in a statement Monday night. "No one can question Biff's passion for helping young people succeed in life, both personally and professionally, but our on-field results have unfortunately fallen short of everyone's expectations. As we move forward into the next chapter of Charlotte 49er Football, we will be looking for a leader to take our program to the next level as a consistent bowl and championship contender."
Despite the firing, Poggi appears to be on good terms with his players. He showed up to practice on Tuesday with his arms up and was greeted by applause and the entire team embracing him in front of one of the end zones.
The firing is not a total loss for Poggi, who is owed a $1.3 million buyout after being let go. Charlotte has two games left this season. Up first is a clash with Florida Atlantic on Saturday. Tight ends coach/associate head coach Tim Brewster will serve as the interim coach.
