Colorado Basketball is Retaining a Massive Piece of Their Roster

The Colorado Buffaloes just landed one of their biggest offseason wins, and it didn’t come from the transfer portal.

Star guard Barrington Hargress is staying in Boulder, according to ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla, providing a massive boost for a program looking to build momentum heading into next season.

Hargress is coming off an outstanding junior campaign where he quietly established himself as one of the most efficient guards in the Big 12. He averaged 14.2 points and 4.5 assists per game while shooting an impressive 53.1% from the field and a scorching 48.5% from three-point range. Even more telling, he led the entire conference in assist-to-turnover ratio, a stat that underscores his control, decision-making, and overall value as a floor general.

In a league loaded with guard play, that level of efficiency stands out.

His return is especially significant given the current state of college basketball, where roster turnover has become the norm. Instead of entering the transfer portal or testing other opportunities, Hargress is doubling down on Colorado, a sign that the program is trending in the right direction. The same cannot be said for freshman guard Isaiah Johnson, who elected to depart the program for the transfer portal.

Under new direction from Athletic Director Fernando Lovo, Colorado has made a clear effort to invest in and retain its core pieces. Keeping a player like Hargress is a direct reflection of that strategy and signals a commitment to continuity in an era when that’s increasingly difficult to maintain.

Hargress provides a steady presence in the backcourt, someone who can score efficiently, create for others, and take care of the basketball at a high level. Those are the types of players that winning teams are built around, especially in the grind of Big 12 play.

In an offseason filled with movement, Colorado just made one of the most important moves possible: standing pat with one of its best players.
