Commanders' initial 53-man roster for 2025 hints at much bigger moves coming

It was a frantic few hours for Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters in his difficult quest to trim the roster from 90 to 53. And the initial squad hints that bigger moves might be coming in the not-too-distant future.

The Commanders got a good look at everybody during the offseason. Some rose to the occasion when all hope seemed lost. Others who were expected to make the team wilted under the pressure. There were also some notable surprises thrown in for good measure.

Washington opted for only five wide receivers, five cornerbacks, and four tight ends. They have a larger number of linebackers than expected after Ale Kaho was included on the team. And the four running backs were expected after Brian Robinson Jr. was traded to the San Francisco 49ers.

Commanders could have more moves to make after confirming initial 53-man roster

There is no backup center as things stand. It's also worth remembering that this is just the first part of the process. Now, Peters and his staff will begin to scour the waiver wire and veteran pool for possibilities to strengthen the roster.

And looking at how things stand currently, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Peters make a few more acquisitions before preparations for Week 1 against the New York Giants gather pace.

The team looks pretty strong, especially at the starting spots. There are some potential depth complications that could impact stability if injuries strike. This won't go unnoticed by Peters, whose ruthless roster construction has been notorious and successful since taking the job.

Finding an understudy for Tyler Biadasz is crucial. Another wide receiver would be wise, and going into the season with five cornerbacks is a gamble. That's without counting for the uncertain status of Noah Igbinoghene, who's been the subject of intense trade speculation after a recent report from Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

Peters knows what he's doing. He's got conviction in everything he does, so the front-office leader won't hesitate to pull the trigger if he feels like more is needed. There are some enticing options now seeking a new challenge. If the Commanders can find the right pieces, that's only going to help their cause.

It'll be a fascinating few days ahead for the Commanders. There's also the practice squad to sort out, but this will largely consist of those around this summer who didn't quite make the grade.

Some will be anxiously looking over their shoulders despite an initial reprieve. But unfortunately for them, Peters removed sentiment from his thought process long ago.
