Commanders preseason proves Adam Peters made a major mistake at critical spot

Adam Peters has been ultra-aggressive throughout the offseason once again. The Washington Commanders' general manager left no stone unturned in his quest to find the upgrades needed for another deep playoff run in 2025. Even so, it's starting to look like he might have made one major mistake.

It's been years since the Commanders had genuine stability at the kicking position. Austin Seibert's exceptional start last season left hope that he could fill the void long-term, but an ill-timed injury put pay to that. Zane Gonzalez was adequate but untrustworthy, which forced Peters into a change of pace when a better option became available.

The Commanders struck quickly when the Indianapolis Colts released Matt Gay. Peters gave him the most guaranteed money for any kicker on a one-year deal in NFL history, which was a supreme vote of confidence. But despite a strong effort throughout training camp, doubts have crept in during the preseason.

Commanders should monitor Matt Gay's performances closey early in the season

Gay's kickoffs haven't been great, but that's the least of Washington's problems. He's also been inaccurate with his field goals, especially from longer range. This was the big concern fans had before his arrival, and it didn't take long for these concerns to grow.

The fifth-round pick out of Utah missed another field goal in Washington's preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens. Gay did successfully convert a 47-yard effort, but there is a growing belief among the fan base that he might not last the season unless consistency increases.

NFL kickers don't have much job security. They are arguably the most disposable asset on any roster. Their fortunes can flip one way or the other quickly, so Gay must ensure these frailties don't come under the microscope when things matter more.

Washington opted not to have a kicking competition this offseason. Peters and head coach Dan Quinn remain steadfast in their confidence around Gay's outlook. But if he cannot come through when it counts, their mindset will change quickly.

The Commanders were involved in a lot of close games last season and came away victorious in most of them. It could be another fine-margin situation this time around, which makes Gay an integral piece of the puzzle who cannot put a foot wrong.

Anything less comes with grave consequences attached, both for the player and the Commanders. A huge effort is needed from Gay, and he cannot crack under the pressure in pursuit of repaying the faith shown by Peters.
