CLEMSON, S.C. – If there’s a player who needed a moment, it was wide receiver Tristan Smith. And on Saturday, he got more than one.
“He’s the new guy, there’s been a lot of pressure on him,” head coach Dabo Swinney said postgame. “But today was a confidence-builder. He needed this.”
Leigh, a transfer from Southeast Missouri with a JUCO past, flashed his athleticism and upside in front of thousands of Tiger fans. Despite a moment of youthful error—dropping the ball before crossing the goal line on what would’ve been a 72-yard score—his overall performance earned praise from Swinney.
“You saw what we saw on tape: long, explosive, and he just works,” Swinney said. “He doesn’t say much. He’s just humble and hungry.”
The wide receiver room is deeper than in years past. With proven playmakers like Tyler Brown and Antonio Williams, Leigh entered spring with everything to prove. Saturday’s performance helps validate the staff’s belief that he can contribute immediately.
Swinney also praised Cole Turner, who made a key play despite being on a pitch count after recovering from an injury. Together with freshman standouts and returning talent, Clemson’s receiving corps looks primed for a breakout year.
“We’ve got six guys who can all start,” Swinney added. “This is going to be a fun group.”
