On June 25, the Dallas Mavericks selected former Duke Blue Devils star Cooper Flagg with the No, 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft.
This was about as much of a no-brainer selection as there has ever been when it comes to a basketball draft's top pick. Flagg has seemed NBA-ready for several years at this point, and is immediately going to boost a Mavericks franchise whose fan base is still reeling from losing Luka Doncic via trade to the Lakers earlier this year.
Dallas basketball teams have been extremely lucky over the past few months, as the Wings' WNBA team drafted UConn Huskies star Paige Bueckers with the No. 1 pick of the 2025 WNBA Draft back in April.
Bueckers is slated to play Indiana Fever star guard Caitlin Clark (who was the 2024 WNBA Draft's top pick) on June 27, so long as Clark is healthy enough to compete. And despite Clark only having one WNBA season under her belt, Cooper Flagg gave her some of the highest praise during his Mavericks introductory press conference on June 27.
When asked about his WNBA Mount Rushmore (a ranking of the league's four best-ever players), Flagg said, "Candace Parker, Brittney Griner, I think A'ja Wilson is on there, and then I might put Caitlin Clark on there, just because she has changed the game so much, and is heading in the right direction. And I just love what she has been able to do," per an X post from @ohnohedidnt24.

While Flagg's including a 23-year-old in his WNBA Mount Rushmore is sure to raise some eyebrows, Clark's massive fan base now has a new NBA rookie they'll be rooting for this season.
