FRISCO — The Dallas Cowboys have a number of prospects to consider with the No. 12 overall pick. A resourceful yet non explosive free agency campaign has the team positioned to select more to talent rather than fit.
Projections of what Dallas may do with this pick have generally focused on the offensive side. That started with the Ashton Jeanty hype months ago and has now morphed into a campaign for receiver, potentially Tetairoa McMillan or Matthew Golden.
But the Cowboys have needs on the edge and especially in the secondary. Last year's first round pick Tyler Guyton weighed in with his take on the decision, perhaps campaigning for a friend of his in this class.
Guyton suggested the Cowboys seek out a highly touted cornerback in the first round, making his claim on a recent episode of the KnoItAllz Podcast.
"Obviously, we just lost Jourdan Lewis, so that's a big loss," Guyton said. "I have a buddy over it at the Longhorns named Jahdae Barron who really, really wants to be a Cowboy. He would be a great addition to the squad."
Credit to the former Oklahoma Sooner for treading enemy lines and putting a word in for his "buddy." As for Barron, shoutouts are certainly appreciated, but he has a résumé that speaks for itself.
Barron won the Thorpe Award this past season at Texas, posting one of the best seasons of any defensive back in the country. He tallied five interceptions with 11 pass breakups and 67 tackles.
Wherever he ends up, Barron will more than likely come off the board in the first round. Unfortunately for him and Guyton, it does not seem the Cowboys are much in the running for his services at the moment.
Dallas will likely select a cornerback at some point in the draft, but they may not look to fill that need until a later round. Barron revealed that he met with the Cowboys back at the NFL Scouting Combine though he is not named among the prospects coming to The Star for Dallas Day or the team's 30 visits.
Whether the Cowboys select him or not, Barron is poised to be a strong secondary piece for another team who gets him.
