Cowboys Connection with Coach Aaron Glenn Gets 'Intriguing' Update

FRISCO - We have strongly suggested in this space that if the Dallas Cowboys wish to shed themselves from their growing reputation as an "unserious football franchise,'' they should find a way to interview, among others, Aaron Glenn.

And suddenly it seems Jerry Jones might agree with us.

A fan-favorite candidate for the New York Jets’ vacancy is Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. He’s already interviewed there – seemingly well – and has ties to the organization, having played for New York for eight seasons and spending two years there in scouting.

But Glenn also his ties here.

Glenn, 52, played for the Cowboys. He's a Texas guy. He's getting rave reviews for his work running the Lions defense.

Anything other than an interview seems illogical.

Mike McCarthy replacement candidates include are defensive guys Robert Saleh and Leslie Frazier. Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, a former Dallas staffer, has also interviewed. Deion Sanders and Jason Witten are worth mentioning, as now we are told that a so-called "mystery candidate'' is Kliff Kingsbury of Washington.

We have asked, "Are the Cowboys going set up a call to Glenn?''

ESPN is now backing up our thoughts on Glenn, reporting on Saturday that Dallas is "intrigued'' by him and "would like to speak to him.''

And what does Glenn think in general of his readiness to make the leap?

“I’m a coach,” Glenn said. “I just happen to be on defense. I understand the offense just as well as a number of people. If you want to hire me, you’re going to hire a coach. You’re not gonna hire a defensive coach. I’m gonna talk to the offense just as much as I’m gonna talk to the defense.”

And what does Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson say about Glenn?

"He's beyond qualified right now. You hear all our players singing his praises,” Johnson said of Glenn. “He is more prepared to be a head coach than maybe anybody I've ever met."

That sounds promising. And obviously worth the Cowboys expressing interest.
