The Dallas Cowboys are adding serious speed to their backfield after selecting Texas Longhorns running back Jaydon Blue in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Blue turned heads at Texas' Pro Day earlier this week, where he reportedly ran a scorching 4.28-second 40-yard dash on his first attempt. As Athlon Sports' own Grant Bricker reported, both Blue and Texas receiver Isaiah Bond believed they had beaten Xavier Worthy’s NFL Combine record of 4.21, though official times weren’t recorded. Even so, Blue’s explosiveness was on full display, and the Cowboys took notice.
While his Combine time of 4.38 seconds was still impressive, it’s Blue’s overall playmaking ability that makes him a strong fit in Dallas. He wrapped up his college career with 1,161 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, adding 56 receptions for 503 yards and seven more scores through the air. His ability to contribute as both a runner and receiver gives the Cowboys much-needed versatility on offense.
Dallas has been searching for more juice in the run game after struggling to create explosive plays last season. Blue brings that in spades. He’s a threat to score every time he touches the ball, whether breaking through the line of scrimmage or making defenders miss in the open field.
He likely won’t be a workhorse right away, but his speed and shiftiness should get him on the field early. If he refines his pass protection and ball security, Blue has the potential to be a game-changing weapon for the Cowboys.
