Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyler Guyton is making good progress in his bid to suit up against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1.
And maybe that's one of the reasons Dallas has just engineered a trade of another offensive lineman.
The Cowboys are moving Asim Richards on Tuesday in a pre-cutdown deal that will send the 2023 fifth-round pick to the New Orleans Saints.
Richards, 24, has shown the ability to offer versatility as a blocker though over the course of his career the 6-4, 310-pounder has been able to record just one start.
Dallas is now deep enough in this room that veteran O-lineman Saahdiq Charles is also getting released today.
Meanwhile ...
Having suffered a broken bone in his knee while in Oxnard for training camp, Guyton was in a race against time to be fit for the Eagles clash, and here we are, 10 days from Week 1, and Tyler was back on the practice field at The Star on Monday.
But how is he feeling after his first practice in over a month?
"I did individual [drills] and I'm feeling blessed, I'm just happy to be back out there," Guyton said.
The fact that Guyton was out on the practice field, and doing some work, is surely a positive sign that he could be Dak Prescott's blindside protector against the Eagles, right?
Well, Guyton wasn't exactly too forthcoming when asked about his chances of playing in the season opener.
"We're going to keep monitoring it, but I'm going to leave that up to the training staff,” Guyton said.
Given that we are under two weeks until the season opener, and there are only four practices left before the team flies out to Philadelphia, Guyton doesn't have that much time to get into "football" shape.
But what gives him the confidence that, after not practicing for the best part of a month, he can hit the ground running in a few weeks?
"Keep chopping wood, just day by day, one foot in front of the other, doing the best that I can to get back," he added.
Having dodged the ACL bullet in Oxnard, now Guyton is trending in the right direction to be playing against the Eagles. But make no mistake, Dallas won't rush the left tackle, but he's certainly in the frame to start in Philadelphia, and that's a positive in itself.
