Dallas Cowboys' All-Pro corner Trevon Diggs has made the franchise eat their words on how he attacks his rehab, with No. 7 now part of the 53-man roster and practicing in the hopes of playing in Week 1.
But we still have a handful of practices to go (four to be precise), and Diggs knows that 10 days is pushing it to be ready to play against the defending champs.
"I think I need a couple more practices to see where I'm at just going full speed at things," Diggs said. "I feel like really good. So, just as far as the repetition and just getting familiar with the game. So I don't know yet, but the more that I practice, we got a break, I'm going to stay here, continue to work and just try to make it at least the first game."
Diggs was fined $500,000 as part of a de-escalator clause in his contract if he didn’t participate in 84 percent of the offseason program, with the All-Pro instead doing his rehab down in Florida.
A move that is now vindicated, given how close he is to returning to football.
This would be the perfect time for Diggs to stick it to the Cowboys for their comments about his rehab, and how seriously he takes it, but when asked if his current position has proven the franchise wrong in their thoughts, Trevon played a straight bat.
"I think it was more so just proving myself that I can get back out there, I really don't think that it's about anybody else," Diggs said. "Whether it's good or bad, can't always listen to the outside noise and just focus on you and what you need to do every day to be successful."
We hear you, Trevon.
Given that Week 1 is only about a week away, many wonder if that is enough time for Diggs to ramp up so he can be not only "just" on the field in Philadelphia but play a crucial role for Matt Eberflus.
"Physically, no, I don't have no limitations," Diggs added. "It's really just ramping up the conditioning part, getting back to football speed, getting back to in-game speed. That's pretty much it."
Diggs has 10 days to get as close to football shape as he can.
It is the very definition of racing against the clock, and based on how Trevon has attacked his rehab, it wouldn't show us in the slightest to see him starting in the season opener.
