The Dallas Cowboys arrived in Oxnard, Calif. on July 20 for training camp and rookie edge rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku has wasted no time making his presence known on the practice field.
With the loss of four-time Pro Bowler and long-time starter Demarcus Lawrence in free agency, the Cowboys will more than likely depend on Ezeiruaku to play significant snaps throughout the course of the season.
“He plays with an edge,” Dante Fowler said. “I love Don’s confidence. He led college football in sacks last year (16.5), so his confidence is really (high). The way he plays out there, I see why he has that type of confidence. He’s a very special young guy.”
Ezeiruaku’s speed rush has been his calling card during camp—causing problems for whatever offensive tackle he’s lined up against.
“I think camp is going really well,'' Ezeiruaku said. “I’ve been ready (to put the pads on) since they called my name on draft night.
“I think the sky is the limit for this (defensive end) group. We got talent. God-willing, we stay healthy.”
Next up for "Eazy''? The Tuesday dual practice with the Rams and then Saturday night's preseason opener at Los Angeles.
Eventually?
The Cowboys will deploy a deep defensive end group that features Ezeiruaku, Fowler, Micah Parsons, Sam Williams and Marshawn Kneeland. With the ability to come at opposing offenses in waves, Dallas’ pass rushing attack has the potential to be one of the most feared in the league.
But this week? Micah remains a contractual hold-in and Dallas doesn't really need to see what Fowler can do.
Enter the second-round rookie from Boston College.
Ezeiruaku’s strong start to training camp is already turning heads—giving the Cowboys another explosive weapon in a defensive front potentially poised to overwhelm and dominate all season.
