Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace have crossed paths quite often so far this summer. The Eberechi Eze fiasco has hogged all the headlines, but there have also been other common transfer targets like Leicester City playmaker Bilal El Khannouss.

Recently, we covered a story revealing that the Eagles were set to challenge the North London club for Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher. The Englishman has been heavily linked with a Premier League return after just one season in La Liga.

Gallagher has been very good for Atletico Madrid under Diego Simeone, but it looks like the Argentinian manager is willing to let him go out this window. Tottenham are one of the many clubs interested in him.

Palace leapfrog Tottenham in Conor Gallagher race

Now, as per Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Crystal Palace have now approached Atletico Madrid to try and sign Conor Gallagher this summer. The negotiations are underway between the two parties.

The idea for now is for the Eagles to loan in the player who has previously played for them during his early days. Gallagher has also had a decent stint at Chelsea but found himself subject to the Blues’ Russian Roulette, as he was let go in favour of new signings.

Tottenham, on their part, are looking around for a new attacking midfielder. James Maddison’s untimely ACL injury and Dejan Kulusevski’s absence has left Thomas Frank without both his starting #10s and a new arrival is likely to be on the cards.

Tactical flexibility

Gallagher isn’t necessarily a natural #10 but he has what it takes to play in that position. He can be a box-crashing goal threat that Spurs could benefit from but he can also play in deeper positions, should the need arise.

Palace’s move for Gallagher could be driven by the exit of Eberechi Eze, who joined Arsenal after flirting with a move to Tottenham throughout the summer. Now, Spurs have a decision to make on if they want to sign the ‘priceless’ Atletico Madrid midfielder.

On a loan, signing Gallagher could be beneficial for Thomas Frank. It gives him good options to decide on a tactical setup based on the opposition. Let’s wait and see how this transfer saga plays out in the coming days.
