Cutdown Day Across the League Offers Dolphins to Add Reinforcements

This Tuesday, the Dolphins will have to bring their roster down from 90 to 53 players as they set their team for the 2025 season.

There will probably be a few players like Liam Eichenberg, Jaylen Wright, and others who will be on the 53-man and then immediately get sent to injured reserve with the hopes of coming back later in the season.

This will allow the Dolphins to add a few players as they look for depth in a long season.

Some positions that I expect Miami to scour the waiver wire for are cornerback, safety, running back, and offensive line.

If a young, intriguing tight end breaks free from another team, that could be another position that the Dolphins explore adding as well.

Along with the aforementioned players that are likely to be placed on IR, Miami also has some other players in those position groups who are questionable for week one, including De’Von Achane, Austin Jackson, and Ashtyn Davis.

Looking at some players who have already been released, here are a few options.

Tre’ McKitty

McKitty, a Florida native, was a third-round pick in 2021 after a strong collegiate career at Florida State.  Even though he has only 16 receptions in his career, McKitty would continue what has been an off-season of the Dolphins, adding young players who have the athletic traits to succeed in the NFL, even though that potential might not be fully realized.

Jimmy Morrissey

Morrisey, also entering his fifth year in the league, has played in 14 games, with four starts. With the questions surrounding Andrew Meyer, Morrisey could be a temporary replacement until Meyer returns.

Lamar Jackson

No, not that Lamar Jackson.  This is the former defensive back out of Nebraska who most recently played for the Atlanta Falcons.  Jackson, like the other players on this list, is under-30 and could offer upside on the back end.

Even if the Dolphins do not add any of these three players, expect the Dolphins to scour the waiver wire for young players who can help deepen the roster and add something on special teams.
