The much-anticipated debut for number one overall pick Cooper Flagg happened on Thursday. The Dallas Mavericks took on the Los Angeles Lakers in their opening game of the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. While many have been familiar with Flagg during his time at Duke, the Summer League was the first opportunity to see him in action against NBA talent. It was an up-and-down performance for the number one overall pick in a close victory over the Lakers.
Cooper Flagg showcased his all-around game on Thursday night. While he only scored ten points, he had six rebounds, four assists, three steals, and one block in 32 minutes of play. He made some highlight reel plays, including an emphatic dunk in the first quarter. However, his shooting percentage left much to be desired. Flagg was 5-for-21 from the field, including 0-for-5 from three, and 0-1 from the free throw line.
While the scoring is definitely not what fans wanted, the Dallas Mavericks have to be happy about how Flagg was able to impact the game despite his struggles. He got the assist on the game-winning shot and showcased solid defensive skills down the stretch. This is often the hallmark of a good player. Even when their shot is off, they still find ways to impact the game.
The Mavericks will take on the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday afternoon. San Antonio won their opening game in the Summer League, dismantling the Philadelphia 76ers 111-70. Second overall pick Dylan Harper did not play in the game, and fans hope to see the first matchup between the top two picks in the draft. Teams are often cautious with their star rookies in the summer. The reps are important, but injury risk can cause teams to sit players.
The scoring doesn’t worry me. Cooper Flagg did exactly what fans wanted to see on Thursday night. He has the skills to affect the game in so many ways. His appearances will be must-see television, and the Summer League is creating more excitement to see him on the court in a regular-season game.
