Carlos Alcaraz is advancing steadily at Roland Garros after defeating Fabian Marozsan 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the second round of the tournament. In a match played under the roof due to intense rain, the defending champion delivered another phenomenal performance and awaits a potential clash against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the third round. Alcaraz now has eight consecutive wins on clay courts.
The start of the match was entirely in favor of the Spaniard, who secured an early break and took the lead with his serve. Alcaraz capitalized on the early momentum, winning the first four games consecutively before Marozsan could finally hold his first service game.
Although the Hungarian had a 73% first serve in – practically identical to Alcaraz's 72% – he only won 41% of his service points, far less than the Spaniard's 67%. Without major issues, Alcaraz closed the set with a third break, 6-1, taking the first set comfortably in just 28 minutes.
However, things changed at the start of the third set (should be second set), when the world No. 56 earned his first break opportunity and then took a 2-0 lead with his serve. This set was much more contested on both sides, with both players creating break points, but neither being able to convert them. Thus, Marozsan clung to his serve and saved up to 5 break points before taking the set 6-4.
Alcaraz did not have a bad performance during the set, but he couldn't convert any of the break opportunities he had. He maintained over 75% first serve, but his effectiveness dropped compared to the first set, in addition to increasing his unforced errors and decreasing winners.
However, from the third set onwards, Marozsan didn't truly challenge Alcaraz. The four-time Grand Slam champion won 12 of the first 15 points of the set and raced to a 3-0 lead. Although the Hungarian once again held his service game, Alcaraz was unwavering in what became an easy set for him, securing another break, which led him to take the set 6-1 in just 25 minutes.
"Carlitos" remained strong from the baseline throughout the match, unbothered by playing indoors. The fourth set had some moments of irregularity from both sides, with breaks for both players up to 2-2. From there, Alcaraz once again took control of the match, winning the last four games consecutively to close out the victory 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The world No. 2 hit a total of 41 winners against Marozsan's mere 22, while committing 25 unforced errors compared to his opponent's 30. The Spaniard – as throughout the clay-court swing – was strong on serve, giving up only three break opportunities, though he could only save one of them. On the other hand, he created 17 break opportunities, converting 9 of them. In the third round, he will face the winner between Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Damir Dzumhur.
