The Cleveland Browns’ tumultuous start to the NFL season received a boost on Sunday when the Browns beat the Green Bay Packers on a last-second field goal by Andre Szmyt, defeating one of the best teams in football by a score of 13-10.

Veteran Joe Flacco held the reins under center, with fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel backing him up and Colorado star Shedeur Sanders, once pegged as a potential first-round pick, sitting third on the depth chart.

One week prior, rumors swirled that the Baltimore Ravens had intended to take Shedeur in Round 5 of the 2025 NFL draft, only to have him push back.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Shedeur declined the opportunity to back up two-time MVP Lamar Jackson, citing slim prospects for early playing time, with Sanders landing three picks later at No. 144 to Cleveland.

Deion Sanders, Colorado head coach, Pro Football Hall of Famer and Shedeur's father, addressed the chatter on the "New Heights" podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce on Monday, making one surprising admission.

"How in the world did they make a big deal out of this? Philly called us on draft day, they didn't mention that, I just let a cat out of the bag... Baltimore and the Browns," Deion said. "I played for Baltimore so me an Ozzie (Newsome) are cool, so he wanted to talk to Shedeur as well as he wanted to talk to me."

Up to this point, there had been no mention of Shedeur and the Philadelphia Eagles also having discussions on draft day.

"So, I put Shedeur on the phone and I don't want to say how it went, but how in the world can somebody fault him for saying or thinking, 'Why in the world would I go back up Lamar (Jackson) for 10 more years?' Like, who comes in with that mindset?" Deion added.

Before entering the NFL, Shedeur was one of the top quarterbacks in college football, throwing for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions in 2024, completing 353 of 477 passes (74%). His play earned him the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and Big 12 Player of the Year honors.

Yet questions arose about his readiness and family spotlight, resulting in a deep fall to the fifth round before the Browns pounced.

In his preseason debut, Shedeur completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns, showing poise and accuracy. An oblique injury sidelined him for Game 2, and in the finale, he managed just 3 of 6 passes for 14 yards while absorbing five sacks.

Shedeur currently remains Cleveland’s No. 3 quarterback behind Flacco and Gabriel. He’s inactive on game days but takes every scout-team snap as a live audition against one of the league’s top defenses.

Through two regular-season contests, he has yet to see a snap.
