The Cleveland Browns’ crowded quarterback room has been one of the NFL’s most-watched preseason storylines, one which resulted in the official naming of Joe Flacco as the team's starter going into Week 1.
However, a new wrinkle was added to the storyline on Thursday, this time involving rookies Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel and a quote that quickly took on a life of its own.
Speaking to reporters after practice, Sanders addressed Gabriel’s now-viral "entertainers" and "competitors" remark from last Saturday’s preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The comment, made during a sideline interview, was widely interpreted online as a jab at Sanders, whose high-profile arrival in the NFL has been accompanied by intense media attention.

On Thursday, Sanders downplayed any tension during an interview posted on YouTube by Cleveland Browns On SI.
"Honestly, I don’t even think about nothing… it can’t do anything to me," Sanders said. "I know that God put the ability and the power within me to not even think about nobody else’s comments, not care. It is what it is. I spoke with him — he said, ‘Nah bro, that wasn’t at you, I see how they’re trying to spin it.’ I’m not tripping, regardless of whatever it was, nobody’s words affects me."
Soon after, Sanders’ father, Hall of Famer and current Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, reacted on social media with a simple, "Son!!"
Coach Kevin Stefanski and the Browns’ staff have made their roster decisions public enough that the starter conversation is settled, for now.
Flacco will open the season, with rookie Dillon Gabriel (No. 94 overall, third round) and Shedeur Sanders (No. 144 overall, fifth round) jockeying for depth behind him.
Stefanski has used this preseason to evaluate combinations and to monitor Shedeur’s recovery from an oblique issue that sidelined him for the Philadelphia game.
Sanders and Gabriel each competed in one preseason game, posting numbers:
Ultimately, the exchange was a headline magnet; short, punchy and easily misread.
Now, attention turns to how each quarterback performs on the field, who can execute in a pro offense, avoid turnovers and stay healthy.
Those factors will shape the Browns’ QB room far more than the "entertainers vs. competitors" line ever could.
