WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said that despite Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) victory last night, Devin Haney (31-1, 15 KOs) will not be forced to vacate the title and is still the WBC light welterwight champion.
Congratulations to Ryan GarcÌa defying all obstacles and winning a huge fight. Congratulations to Devin Haney for showing his huge heart and class.
Just as in Corrales vs Castillo 2 , with the challenger not making weight, Haney remains WBC champion.— Mauricio Sulaiman (@wbcmoro) April 21, 2024
Now what’s not certain is if Haney is going to keep the belt. He has a mandatory fight in Sandor Martin and many believe that he’d rather try to make a rematch against Garcia or go after other big name fighters in the 140 division. Either way, bigger fights are still to be made. Paying more sanction fees to fight a mandatory that’s relatively unknown probably doesn’t make sense for Haney. Stay tuned!
