Devin Haney (32-0, 15 KOs) is back in the win column, but it came with a less than entertaining outing against Jose Ramirez (29-3, 18 KOs) in NYC as the co-main to Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando Romero. All three judges saw this for Haney (119-109, 118-110& 119-109) as he gets his first win after a 12-month layoff.
According to CompuBox, “Haney landed 70 of 224 total punches and Ramirez landed 40 of 279. In most rounds, Haney did not punch for the 1st 30 seconds, a couple of times it was a full minute before he threw.”
The opening round was weird, as Haney moved around a ton but threw no punches. Ramirez was following Haney and was not landing most of the punches thrown. Neither man did anything spectacular throughout the round.
Haney began throwing the left jab in the second round, but he still appeared to be affected by the fight in April 2024. He almost tripped on his feet, moving backward off a feint by Ramirez. Haney seemed like he just didn’t want to get hit.
In the third round, Haney increased his punch output as he led with the left jab followed by the straight right hand. Ramirez kept following him around as he could not land a punch with the consistently moving Haney.
From the fourth round all the way until the final bell, every round was almost identical. Haney was moving around the outskirts of the ring while Ramirez chased him. Haney would land a three-punch combination and then get back to moving around the ring. Ramirez was gun-shy and failed to create any significant offense for himself. The fight was not memorable by any stretch of the word, and there are many questions about Haney, who seemed to be still mentally stuck in April 2024 when he suffered multiple knockdowns against Garcia. Time will tell if Haney will ever get back to where he was in the lightweight division.
