Stuart Hogg once shone as Scotland’s rugby icon, but things have twisted rather unexpectedly for him. At 32, he’s now caught up in serious legal trouble after admitting guilt in a domestic abuse case against his ex-wife, Gillian, a case that ran from 2019 to 2024.
His recent court review was held without him in the room. His lawyer, Mat Patrick, noted that although Hogg is following the court’s supervision order, there’s still some real work needed for him to get his act together.
Sheriff Peter Paterson summed it up bluntly, remarking that since he had pleaded guilty, he would really have to face the fallout and simply move on. There’s been a lot of talk about him having to let go of any feelings of being unfairly treated.
Back in January 2025, the decision was made to give him a 12-month community payback order with supervision instead of sending him to jail. On top of that, he’s been hit with a strict five-year restraining order that stops him from having any contact with Mrs. Hogg.
The problem started with repeated episodes of him stalking his ex’s routines and bombarding her with distressing messages. In one wild burst, he shot off over 200 texts in just a few hours, causing her a panic attack.
Even though Hogg stepped away from professional rugby in July 2023, he surprised everyone by signing a two-year deal with Montpellier. That move has only added fuel to the fire, with public figures and fans alike questioning if his MBE should be stripped away. The next review of his case is set for June 16. His presence in court may highly depend on how well he sticks to that supervision order.
