Dolphins Sign a Fullback DJ Herman
Miami has signed a player to its active roster after a successful tryout during the rookie minicamp. DJ Herman, a collegiate linebacker at the University of San Diego State, has made the switch to fullback in the Bobby Slowik offense and has earned himself a contract. He was teammates with the Dolphins’ first-round selection, Chris Johnson.
Herman is a 6-foot-2-inch-tall athlete. He spent his entire collegiate career with the Aztecs, playing mainly special teams. He made contributions as a run stopper in 2024 and 2025, combining for 50 tackles across those 2 seasons. The switch to fullback was intentional for both Herman and the Dolphins, as he is a physical presence in the run game and offers special teams ability, which is a pivotal role for the fullback position. Nick Bellore is the most notable active NFL player who switched from collegiate linebacker to fullback in the pros.
Former Dolphin Elandon Roberts played both sides of the ball on his rookie contract with the New England Patriots. Herman is now the newest player to switch for a better chance at play time in the NFL.
It is an uphill battle for any substance of an NFL career, but Herman has made it past the first step. He will be able to push for a roster spot blocking in heavy sets for the Dolphins during the full summer camp and preseason games.
