Don't let an upset break your bracket

Don't let an upset break your bracket

If you're like us, you've already been deep into consuming content about the brackets and the teams as we gear up for the NCAA Tournament's start later this week. It's truly one of the most exciting sporting events of the year, and we cannot wait to sit back and watch never-ending hoops starting early Thursday afternoon.

We have you covered on the content side, so be sure you acclimate yourself with the teams and regions as you begin filling out your own bracket.

Best Bet in Each Region | Four teams to fade | Teams you can trust

Letting the odds tell us who may be the best upset picks

We love reading into each team's strengths and weaknesses and how teams match up with their first few potential opponents, but sometimes simply looking at the odds can help paint a more complete picture. Seeing which double-digit seeds are either favored or only slight underdogs can help better evaluate the matchups and which team might be worth advancing as an upset pick in your own bracket.

Spreads and totals are up for every game, and there are a few leading candidates to advance to the second round for teams at No. 10 or lower.

No. 10 Utah State (-2) favored over No. 7 Missouri

The lone double-digit seed to be the favorite is Utah State, which is music to this writer's ears. Rumor has it he already blindly moved the Aggies into his Sweet 16 this morning after seeing their balanced, efficient offense led by upperclassmen guards. Missouri has sported some defensive vulnerabilities this year, making the Tigers the only single-digit seed that could technically pull off an "upset" in Round 1.

Sportsbooks have quite a few games projected to be close

While no other double-digit seeds are favored, quite a few have spreads of five or less against their opponents. If you're looking to advance some lower-seeded teams in your bracket, we'd recommend beginning your search here:

  • No. 12 Charleston (+5) vs. No. 5 San Diego State
  • No. 12 VCU (+3.5) vs. No. 5 Saint Mary's
  • No. 11 Providence (+3.5) vs. Kentucky
  • No. 12 Drake (+2.5) vs. No. 5 Miami
  • No. 13 Kent State (+4) vs. No. 4 Indiana

For what it's worth, we like VCU, Drake and Providence all to advance. Providence is a particularly intriguing upset pick as its top player, Bryce Hopkins, is a transfer from Kentucky, the team the Friars play first. Talk about some poetic revenge.

Enjoy filling out your bracket. We will be sure to keep the coverage flowing here this week as we break down the regions in more depth and lock in our own Final Fours.

In the news ...

NCAA Men's Tournament bracket set — The most wonderful time of the year has arrived: March Madness! Selection Sunday wrapped a weekend full of conference championships, and the field is all but set as we near the Round of 64. Alabama was awarded the top overall seed and is +650 to win it all out of the South Region, the second-best odds to Houston's at +450. Purdue is the top seed in the East Region and +1000 to cut down the nets in April, and the West Region has both No. 1 Kansas and No. 2 UCLA at +1200 to win it all.

Jalen Ramsey traded to Miami Dolphins — The big news out of the NFL Sunday was that All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey is being traded from the Rams to the Dolphins. The compensation was just a third-round pick and TE Hunter Long, a massive move for a Miami team looking to keep pace in a loaded AFC. Ramsey helped lead Los Angeles to a Super Bowl win, and the 28-year old will look to do it again for a Dolphins team with serious potential. Assuming Tua Tagovailoa can stay healthy, Miami is a team to watch. The Dolphins are currently +2500 to win the Super Bowl, the 10th-best odds in the league.

Scottie Scheffler cruises to Players Championship win — Scottie Scheffler, who was 10-1 to win The Players prior to the action getting started, easily took home the win at TPC Sawgrass this weekend with a 17-under 271. Scheffler, 26, is now the reigning champion at The Masters and TPC, becoming just the third golfer in history to hold the two titles simultaneously. He joins some elite company there, with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods the others to pull off the feat. Scheffler has been dominant over the past two seasons and is +800 to defend his Masters title in a few weeks.

Fever Coach Stephanie White Has Given One Player the Green Light Amid Caitlin Clark's Injury

Caitlin Clark is expected to sit out for a fourth straight game on Sunday when the Indiana Fever take on the Chicago Sky in a much-awaited rivalry matchup. The 23-year-old is still dealing with a reaggravated groin strain and has no timetable to return. The rest of her Fever teammates have had to step up in her absence. There is, perhaps, no other player who has taken a bigger role on the offensive end amid Clark’s injury spell than three-time All-Star Kelsey Mitchell. Mitchell, however, struggled with her shot in Thursday’s win against the Las Vegas Aces. The 5-foot-8 guard shot the ball poorly in the first three quarters, going just 4-of-19 from the field for 12 points. Mitchell caught fire in the fourth, though. She went 4-of-5 in the final frame for nine points, finishing with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-24 shooting. This is exactly why head coach Stephanie White remains completely confident in Mitchell’s scoring ability. The veteran coach has made it clear that she has given Mitchell the green light to shoot the rock. “The biggest thing with Kelsey is just telling her, ‘Let it fly.’ It’s going to go,” White said after Thursday’s win against Las Vegas. "... Keep shooting it from outside. She made some big ones when we needed them.” Kelsey Mitchell Has Stepped up Amid Clark's Injury Mitchell has answered the call for the Fever of late. In the three games Clark has been sidelined, Mitchell has put up averages of 22.0 points on 42.9% shooting. She also knocked down 2.7 triples during that stretch on a 34.8% clip. The 29-year-old veteran will need to keep her foot on the gas on Sunday as the Fever try to take down the Sky at United Center. With Clark watching from the bench, the Fever will rely on Mitchell’s scoring against Chicago as they look to improve on their 13-12 record. The Fever and Sky meet at 3 p.m. ET Sunday on ABC.

Report: Bengals draw hard line in Trey Hendrickson contract talks

Cincinnati Bengals star defensive end Trey Hendrickson has been holding out from training camp as he seeks a new contract, and it does not sound like the two sides are all that close to a deal. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said on "SportsCenter" Monday that there has been "some progress" in negotiations between the Bengals and Hendrickson's representatives over the past week or so. The real disagreement has to do with guaranteed money, and Cincinnati's brass is not budging. "Hendrickson wants a stronger guaranteed structure, particularly later in what should be a multiyear deal. In talking to people with the Bengals they feel like, 'Hey, we've probably relented as far as we can go.' So this is a classic stare-off right now, and it's time to buckle up," Fowler said, via Andrew Peters of Bleacher Report. Hendrickson is set to earn $16M in base salary in the final year of his contract this season. He recently said he has shown a willingness to take less than market value on a new deal, but the Bengals do not want to guarantee him money beyond the 2026 season. Based on what he has said, the 30-year-old Hendrickson is not seeking to become the highest-paid defensive player in football. In order to accomplish that, he would have to top the three-year, $123M extension T.J. Watt signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. Hendrickson had 35 sacks over the past two seasons, which was the most in the NFL during that span. He had 17.5 sacks each season and finished second in NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2024. The Bengals took care of one major offseason issue on Sunday when they finally signed first-round pick Shemar Stewart to a rookie deal. All it will take is one side to budge in the team's ongoing stalemate with Hendrickson, but all parties seem to be dug in as training camp rolls on.

Cubs in danger of making enormous trade-deadline mistake

Boasting a 62-44 record in the NL Central, the Chicago Cubs are still searching for a way to pull ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers took sole possession of first place in the division from the Cubs in an 8-4 win on Monday. Chicago will get its chance before the three-game set is over, but if the Cubs should fall to the Brewers, the trade deadline will be viewed as essential for their World Series chances. Several rumors of Chicago’s interest in starters, relievers and third basemen have swirled nonstop. And while they have shown interest in several quality names — Mitch Keller, Eugenio Suárez, MacKenzie Gore — some of their other trade targets are less than ideal. Among their worst sources of interest (if not, the worst) is struggling Braves reliever Raisel Iglesias, who is in his walk year. Hiding behind his shining 2.99 career ERA is a rather shocking, career-high 4.97 ERA, to which he has pitched this season. He is still a strikeout pitcher, having accumulated 46 Ks in 41.2 innings, but his run prevention capabilities have seemingly deteriorated. It was only last season when Iglesias posted a stellar 1.95 ERA. Since then, his home run total doubled, from surrendering just four last year to eight so far this year. His opponent batting average has also jumped, from .160 to .250. Iglesias is no stranger to success. He threw to ERAs south of 3.00 in eight of his 11 MLB years. However, this season, he just doesn’t appear to have it. Any team that trades for Iglesias in the last year of his contract would be betting that he can return to elite form before the season is over. Taking a risk on a pitcher like Iglesias in his current condition, especially when there are several other more reliable arms on the market, would be ill-advised. And for the Cubs, who are in a win-now position, having secured one guaranteed year of Kyle Tucker, taking a gamble on Iglesias could easily risk everything they worked for this season.

LA Lakers have inside track to sign 2x All-Star in new buyout deal, it would complete their roster

The Los Angeles Lakers could make yet another addition to their roster this offseason. After a poor postseason run, the Los Angeles Lakers have been active this summer in hopes of bolstering their roster. In fact, general manager Rob Pelinka has already made some key additions to the roster, including Deandre Ayton, Jake LaRavia, and Marcus Smart. Signing an elite center was arguably the most important task for Pelinka this offseason, and he fulfilled it with the arrival of Ayton. However, one could argue that the Lakers still need a quality backup center. Luka Doncic could recruit Nikola Vucevic to the Los Angeles Lakers While the Lakers re-signed Jaxson Hayes, a player of Chicago Bulls star Nikola Vucevic’s caliber would undoubtedly be a major upgrade. Moreover, with Vucevic being on the Lakers’ radar for years, it means that the organization rates him highly. Previously, the Bulls didn’t indulge in a trade with the Purple and Gold around Vucevic. It has led to Vucevic’s trade value diminishing so much that he is expected to complete a contract buyout with the Bulls. The Laker Nation would love to sign the 34-year-old, and Luka Doncic can help in this quest. How? Well, Doncic and Vucevic share the same agent in Bill Duffy. This means that if Vucevic completes a buyout, the Lakers could have the upper hand in negotiations. The 2x NBA All-Star has given the last five and a half seasons of his career to the Bulls, but it’s obvious that their time together is about to end sooner rather than later. Adding fuel to the fire were former Orlando Magic star Evan Fournier’s comments. Fournier ridiculed the Bulls while taking a shot at Vucevic after the latter called out his move overseas. Luka Doncic has already proven he can recruit stars Ahead of his first full season with the Lakers, Doncic is doing everything in his power to bring back the glory days for the Lakers. He has already undergone a massive transformation to silence his critics. Additionally, Doncic has been actively involved in recruiting players for the Lakers. Smart admitted Doncic was a huge reason behind his decision to sign with the Lakers. Ayton also acknowledged Luka’s role in his decision to join the Purple and Gold. Let’s not forget Ayton also has the same agent as the Slovenian superstar. So, Doncic has already given the inside track for one star; there’s no reason to doubt he would do the same in Vucevic’s case.
