Everyone acts surprised when Duke isn’t totally awful at college football.

Of course it’s a basketball school, and it’s not easy for small, smart, private schools to consistently rock at football, Duke has won 26 games over the last three seasons.

Florida State has won 25. Miami has won 22.

SMU not included, over the last three years, the only ACC teams with more wins than Duke are Clemson (30) and Louisville (27).

Usually, schools like Duke that succeed like this are a random blip, but the program has four seasons with eight wins or more in the last seven years, and seven in the last 12, spanning three head coaches.

Maybe the lack of respect for Duke football is locked in after a run of 18 seasons from 1995 to 2012 without a winning campaign. Maybe it really is because of the success on the basketball side.

Whatever the reason, it doesn’t matter - second-year head coach Manny Diaz has a team returning that should keep it all going.

His defense will once again attack, the offense got a few upgrades, and it’s the ACC, not the SEC or Big Ten. The schedule isn’t that bad.
