Manny Diaz and the Duke Blue Devils have picked up a commitment from DeShawn Spencer of Saraland High School.
Spencer is considered a three-star recruit on multiple sites. He chose Duke over Maryland, Wisconsin, Houston and others.
“Being able to make a difference is why I chose Duke,” Spencer told Touchdown Alabama. “It is so family-oriented. Everyone showed love. The campus is beautiful, and the academics are among the best in the nation. When people think of Duke, wide receivers do not necessarily come to mind, so I feel I could be that player that really set the standard for the receiver position and change the narrative around the program.”
Spencer details his relationship with the coaching staff and life after football as other reasons why he chose Duke.
“The coaches are great,” Spencer said. “I can call for whatever reason. They call to not only ask about football but to see how my day is going and check-in. I was just considering life after football, knowing that I have a degree from Duke means a lot to me. They have some of the best facilities around, all the networking and tools that are embedded in the university really stood out to me.”
Spencer has a message to all the Duke faithful now that he is committed.
“I am coming in to make a difference, and I cannot wait to get on campus,” said Spencer. “Go Blue Devils.”
Last season, Spencer registered 54 receptions for 1,034 yards and 16 touchdowns.
