It’s smart school on smart school action as these two push through the finishing kick.
Duke has true national championship hopes, and it showed them off with a huge flex against one Bay Area team in a 78-57 win over Cal. After this is a trip to Virginia followed up by a fun date against Illinois in New York City.
Stanford is deep in the mix for an at-large NCAA Tournament spot, but it lost three of its last four. With Cal, Boston College, SMU, and at Notre Dame to follow there’s a chance to build up the base of wins, but beating Duke would do wonders.

How did Clemson take down Duke? It won the battle on the boards and hit just about everything from the field shooting 59%. Stanford doesn’t have a slew of sharpshooters, but it has to get to the rim and create easy chances.
The Cardinal 8-0 when hitting at least 47% their shots and 14-3 when hitting 44%. Overall the Blue Devil defense is strong, but it goes through lapses - it’ll have problems with Stanford on the offensive glass.
Stanford doesn’t shoot well enough.
Yeah, it has its moments, and yeah, it has the potential to generate a slew of good chances from close range, but overall it’s just average from the field - and that’s being generous.
It’s not consistent enough and doesn’t have the fast break ability to generate points in spurts if this gets into a firefight. And then there’s Stanford’s problem that …
Duke is unbeaten at home and it hasn’t been particularly close. Out of the 14 games in Cameron Indoor, Notre Dame lost by eight, Auburn - yes, that Auburn - lost by six. Everyone else lost by double-digits, and so will Stanford.
The Cardinal is just 3-7 on the road, but they took out North Carolina in Chapel Hill. They won’t shoot well enough to pull this off.
Prediction: Duke 84, Stanford 62
