Dustin Johnson is a Free Agent

At 40 years old, is Dustin Johnson at an equipment crossroads?

That’s what many would think after seeing the news that the two-time major winner had parted ways with his longtime equipment company, Taylor Made.

However, Johnson is not at a crossroads; there is more of a pause in his relationship that started in 2007 when he turned professional.

With his contract getting ready to expire, Taylor Made and Johnson’s agent, David Winkel, worked on a bridge agreement for the 2025 season in the summer.

With both sides apart on expectations, they agreed in the Fall that a deal was impossible, and Johnson became a free agent.

As a collegiate player at Coastal Carolina, Johnson didn’t play Taylor Made equipment but had Titleist woods, Mizuno irons, Vokey Wedges, and a Titleist ball in his bag.

It wasn’t until he tested Taylor Made equipment in the fall of 2007 that the Walker Cupper decided to make a change and made a complete transition with an incentive-laden contract.

Since 2008, Johnson’s first full season, he has only played Taylor Made equipment.

When he won his first time on the PGA Tour at the Turning Stone Championship in 2008, he played Taylor Made.

And when he won his first major title, the U.S. Open at Oakmont in 2016, he played Taylor Made.

With 24 PGA Tour wins and three LIV wins, Johnson has earned over $85 million while playing Taylor Made.

Johnson is testing all types of equipment but has not changed his bag, except adding the new Taylor Made driver for the LIV opener in Saudi Arabia.

“There is no real rush,” Winkel said of Johnson making an equipment change. “He wants to have fun and enjoy the process.”

Instead, Johnson wants to find something better, even though the news has created opportunities for other equipment companies to sign him.

Winkel has already received a call from a major manufacturer about Johnson’s availability on Monday when the word got out.

What might bring him back to Taylor Made could be a LIV – PGA Tour deal.

But right now, Taylor Made has been removed with his bag and headwear and replaced with the 4Aces logo.

As everyone waits for the process to sort itself out with the PGA Tour, LIV and PIF, some deal is believed to be forthcoming, Johnson and Taylor Made could quickly reunite if Johnson has access to the PGA Tour.

For now, Johnson is taking his time to test new equipment, which he hasn’t done since 2007.
