Eagles decided to keep flawed preseason star on official 53-man roster

The final week of NFL cuts is a pressure cooker. It separates the sure things from the hopefuls. Every snap feels like a live audition for the new Eagles. And even the older ones. Some flashed brilliance one moment and frustration the next. And that's a tantalizing puzzle for a coaching staff with glaring needs.

Have you ever seen a guy trip over the red carpet and still get handed the mic? That’s Jakorian Bennett right now. He’s the underdog who showed up late to the cookout, spilled the lemonade, but somehow still got invited to sit at the grown-ups’ table.

The Eagles made it official. Bennett was on their initial 53-man roster. The decision underscores both Bennett’s immense potential and the team’s pressing need for a solution opposite Quinyon Mitchell.

Why the Gamble Makes Sense—Sort Of

Bennett’s preseason was a true rollercoaster. He arrived via trade from Las Vegas just weeks ago, cramming the playbook like a student before finals. His performance? Well, it was a mixed bag.

He delivered a crucial pass breakup against the Browns but also got beat deep and flagged for interference. Against the Jets, however, his playmaking instincts shone through with tight coverage and sure tackling.

Analyst Reuben Frank noted, “I just see Jakorian Bennett making plays when he’s out there that Kelee Ringo and Adoree’ Jackson haven’t been making.” Besides, this choice reveals the Eagles’ hand.

The competition for the CB2 job remains wide open. Veterans Jackson and Ringo failed to seize the role, creating a vacuum. Bennett’s aggressive style, even with its risks, offered a higher ceiling. The coaching staff is betting that his flaws are coachable and his ball skills are innate.

Now, the focus shifts from making the team to securing a role.

A Number and a New Beginning

Bennett’s immediate future likely involves special teams and a gradual integration into the defense. The Eagles won’t throw him into the deep end immediately. Consequently, Jackson may still start Week 1. But the leash will be short.

Bennett’s progress in practice will dictate his snap count. The team’s belief in his development curve is key.

Bennett has been a sponge, constantly meeting with coaches to accelerate his learning. He stated, “I’m just trying to catch up. Because these guys, they’ve been battling with each other for a little minute before I got here... you just want to feel free, you just want to feel like you know everything, and you can just go out there and play fast.” This dedication likely sealed his roster spot over a more experienced, but less dynamic, player.

His next order of business? It must be ditching the dreaded jersey number 49. As Anthony DiBona posted on X, “There are a few good Eagles jersey numbers available after today’s reported moves: #19 #23 #34 #35 #87.” A new digit symbolizes a fresh start and a permanent home.

The Eagles didn’t keep Bennett because he’s perfect. Howie Roseman and company kept him because he might become it. That’s the gamble. That’s the hope. And in a league where corners are currency, Philly just invested in a wildcard. “It’s been like a lot of ups and downs through this journey, but it’s what made me the person I am today.” Bennett once said. Well, buckle up. The ride’s just getting started.
