This is the toughest part of the job for Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, as tough roster decisions must be made.
The Eagles and the 31 other teams in the NFL have until Tuesday to finalize their roster cuts, reducing the number of players to 53. What makes these decisions challenging is that good players aren't going to make the roster, and players' dreams of making the NFL will be dashed.
There is one player on the Eagles that is looking like an easy selection for the team to let go of as part of the cutdown.
The number one problem for Williams is that he never really had a spot on the team. He has played as a defensive back and wide receiver, but he's primarily a special teams returner.
Williams finished the preseason with two tackles. He was mainly on special teams as he returned two kickoffs for 47 yards. Williams added four punt returns for 26 yards.
Philly has returners who performed better than Williams did, with Ainias Smith having a nice 46-yard punt return against the Cincinnati Bengals that helped seal what could end up being his job. On kickoff, the Eagles have looked at Will Shipley and A.J. Dillon as potential options, as well as Smith.
Williams doesn't offer enough to the team to justify his making the 53-man roster. There are other players who can do what he does and contribute in other ways.
It was never entirely clear whether Williams had a legitimate shot at making the roster, but there were many players who outperformed him on the field. He always seemed to be on the outside looking in, as if he were playing for another roster spot on any of the other NFL teams.
