It's never a good move when your employers hire your replacement after "poaching" you from the competition. Unfortunately for Dorian Thompson-Robinson that's exactly what he is dealing with during his 3rd year of his NFL career.
DTR was traded initially to compete for the QB3 job in Philly. Despite lackluster results with the Browns (one touchdown to 10 interceptions in his career), DTR was given a decent opportunity in the preseason, both during games and practice, to prove he was capable of being an NFL franchise's QB3.
While he was given an opportunity, a lackluster performance has not only led to Eagles general manager Howie Roseman trading for his replacement/upgrade, but also to his ultimate release. The Eagles not only added Sam Howell but also cut DTR, who is now going through waivers in hopes of extending his NFL career.
This series of events may bring Roseman his only blemish with trade this season. In addition to gaining draft capital, the Eagles have acquired wide receiver John Metchie III and cornerback Jakorian Bennett while trading defensive end Bryce Huff, thereby obtaining solid draft capital after the 2025 NFL draft. So far, it looks like the quarterback swap with Pickett for DTR and the Browns' fifth-round pick may be a wash.
The silver lining in the deal may be that Roseman coupled the 164th overall pick with their 32nd overall pick to acquire the Chiefs' 31st overall pick, which resulted in the Eagles drafting linebacker Jihaad Campbell.
The only competition for Roseman's worst move this offseason could be his trade of safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for offensive lineman Kenyon Green and a 2026 fifth-round pick.
If it wasn't for the injury to Gardner-Johnson, in which he tore his ACL, the acquisition of Kenyon Green also appears to be a "wash," with Green's roster status also in question.
