Earlier today, the Greensboro Gargoyles announced that they have signed goaltender Jake Sibell to a contract for the upcoming ECHL season. Sibell officially becomes the Greensboro Gargoyles first goaltender in franchise history.

Prior to signing his first professional contract, Sibell spent four seasons in the collegiate ranks. His first two collegiate seasons were spent at Niagara University, where in his first season, he recorded a .885 SV% and a 3.85 GAA in 11 games. The following season with Niagara, Sibell dropped in playing time, appearing in only three games, posting a .857 SV% and a 3.55 GAA. That being said, the old goaltender development joke “goalies are weird” seems to be true with Sibell, as his next two seasons at the University of St. Thomas were significantly better.

Sibell spent a lot more time on the ice, and his stats were better for it. In his first season with St. Thomas, he appeared in 15 games, posting a .923 SV% and a 2.18 GAA. Sibell’s final collegiate season was a very strong showing, going 12-5-3 with a .923 SV% and a 2.46 GAA, also posting a shutout. During his time with St. Thomas, Sibell also earned some honors, being recognized as the CCHA goaltender of the week after making 57 saves in a game against Bowling Green. Those 57 saves were a program record for the Tommies. As long as Sibell continues to progress, I believe he will develop into a strong candidate in net for Greensboro. Sibell is Greensboro’s only goaltender on the roster as of right now; expect another one to join the roster within the next two weeks.
