Look, I’ll be honest with you – when I first heard about Edge of Memories, my initial thought was “great, another JRPG trying to recapture the magic of the classics.” But after diving into what Midgar Studio has cooking, I’m genuinely excited about this one. And trust me, that doesn’t happen often in this oversaturated market.

What Makes Edge of Memories Special?

Edge of Memories isn’t just another run-of-the-mill action RPG. This bad boy comes from the folks at Midgar Studio, the same team behind Edge of Eternity and Hover. They’re clearly passionate about JRPGs, and it shows in every frame of footage we’ve seen so far.

The story follows Eline, a Soul Whisperer (which sounds way cooler than it probably should), as she battles against something called the Corrosion. Think of it as a plague that turns everything – plants, animals, people – into nightmarish abominations. Cheerful stuff, right? But here’s the kicker: Eline discovers she can actually control this corruption within her own body. It’s giving me serious “power at a terrible cost” vibes, and I’m here for it.

Combat That Actually Looks Fun

Here’s where things get interesting. The combat system promises to let you string together “spectacular combos” while switching between quick strikes and devastating attacks. Your companions aren’t just glorified healing bots either – they’re integral to victory, each bringing their own customizable skills to the table.

But wait, there’s more! (I promise I’m not selling you a kitchen gadget.) Eline can enter a Berserker mode where she goes absolutely ballistic, delivering what the developers describe as “earth-shattering blows” and “merciless executions.” Finally, a game that understands sometimes you want to unleash hell on your enemies.

A World Worth Exploring

The continent of Avaris looks genuinely stunning, thanks to Unreal Engine 5 doing the heavy lifting. From sandy coastal cities to snow-capped mountains, each area bears the scars of the Corrosion plague. The visual style draws heavily from Japanese animation, which honestly had me at hello.

You’ll be traversing this world on your trusty Nekaroo – basically an agile cat mount that can reach areas your boring human legs can’t. Because who doesn’t want to ride a magical cat across a plague-ravaged continent?

The Music Might Make You Cry

The soundtrack deserves special mention here. Cédric Menendez is composing, with vocals by Emi Evans (yes, the same Emi Evans from NieR: Automata). But here’s the real kicker – Yasunori Mitsuda, the legendary composer behind Chrono Trigger and Xenoblade Chronicles, is creating the final theme. My wallet is already weeping in anticipation.

Bottom Line

Edge of Memories is shaping up to be something special. With its unique corruption mechanic, engaging combat system, and that absolutely stacked musical pedigree, it could be the JRPG revival we’ve all been waiting for. The game promises no filler quests – every mission supposedly adds depth to the story or character relationships. In an era of 100+ hour bloated RPGs, that’s music to my ears.

Mark your calendars for 2026, folks. This one might actually be worth the wait.
