With the Edmonton Oilers falling short in the Stanley Cup Final once again, the front office has a lot of pressure on it heading into next season. Despite the Oilers taking a 1-0 lead in the series, Edmonton couldn't get ove thte hump and crumbled when the lights were brightest.
For the first time in a long time, the Oilers' defense wasn't the issue. Instead, it was an inconsistent effort from the goaltenders, Calvin Pickard and Stuart Skinner.
Granted, the two players did deal with injuries throughout the playoffs, especially in Skinner's case. But the lack of consistency did hurt the team down the stretch of the postseason.
Oilers insider Jason Gregor suggested onthe DFO Rundown podcast that changes could be coming to the goalie tandem this year. With Edmonton falling short yet, the front office likely understands that something has to be done.
“I’ll be surprised if after the trade deadline…the same two goalies are in Edmonton in Pickard and Skinner. I just think it’s inevitable there’s going to be a change there,” Gregor noted.

The Oilers were rumored to have spoken with the Anaheim Ducks about veteran goalie John Gobson before he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. It seems that Edmonton is looking to make some big changes as it tries to go after the Stanley Cup again.
If anything, a change in goaltending could give this team some new life and energy. For the Oilers to finally get over the hump, a trade may be needed to happen.
