ESPN has two major concerns about Buffalo Bills first round draft pick Maxwell Hairston

The Buffalo Bills addressed a big need in their secondary by selecting former Kentucky Wildcats cornerback Maxwell Hairston with the No. 30 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Buffalo is hoping that Hairston will be a longterm solution at cornerback opposite Christian Benford.

Hairston certainly has the athletic traits to be a reliable NFL cornerback (he ran a 4.28 in the 40-yard dash), but ESPN has a couple of big concerns about the former Kentucky standout.

ESPN's Alaina Getzenberg pointed out that there are concerns about Hairston's health and his tackling abilities.

From ESPN: Should Bills have concerns about Hairston's health (and tackling)? The corner sat out five games in 2024 because of a shoulder injury but general manager Brandon Beane said that "he's back" as far as the Bills know and should be ready to participate this spring. He was not as effective a tackler when he returned for the last three games of the season, missing five tackles in those games, as many as he had in his previous nine games combined. The Bills also brought back veterans with experience in coach Sean McDermott's defense in Tre'Davious White and Dane Jackson this offseason, but Hairston should be in a competition for a starting role.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane doesn't seem to be to worried about Hairston's tackling abilities, telling reporters that Hairston is a "willing tackler" on Thursday night after the selection was made.

As for the health issues, it's worth noting that Hairston played in 25 games for the Wildcats in 2022 and 2023 before missing a few games due to a shoulder injury in 2024.

Injuries are going to happen, and they can be unpredictable. Just because Hairston missed some time last season due to an injury doesn't mean there should be major concerns about his ability to stay healthy at the next level.
