Ex-Suns Forward Cody Martin Drawing Free Agent Interest From West Contender: Report

The Phoenix Suns entered the offseason expected to make major changes to their roster and that is exactly what they have done thus far.

Phoenix began their summer by trading Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets for a package centered around Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and the pick used to select Khaman Maluach.

They also acquired Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets and bought out Bradley Beal’s contract, allowing him to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers.

With Durant and Beal gone, Devin Booker remains the only star from their big three that remains in Phoenix and the Suns rewarded him with a massive contract extension this offseason.

While the Suns have completely overhauled their roster this offseason, one of their former players has been in the news recently.

That player is free agent forward Cody Martin as he is reportedly being targeted by a Western Conference contender.

Warriors targeting Cody Martin in free agency

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Golden State Warriors have emerged as a potential landing spot for Martin as he has recently been added to their list of free agent targets.

“We've reported previously that Seth Curry and Malcolm Brogdon are candidates for a Warriors roster spot after Kuminga's situation is resolved,” Fischer wrote. “Another name on the Warriors' list of bench targets, sources say, is Cody Martin.”

Of course, the Warriors have failed to make any moves in free agency thus far as they await a decision by restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga who has caused them to miss out on multiple free agent targets.

Despite this, it has been reported that Golden State does have deals in place with multiple free agents that will likely be finalized after Kuminga’s situation is resolved and they are also looking for more talent to add to improve their depth, including Martin.

Martin spent the first five and a half seasons of his career with the Charlotte Hornets where he averaged 6.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 44.0% from the field and 31.9% from three.

The 29-year-old forward was then traded to the Suns last season where he struggled to find playing time despite Phoenix’s struggles as a team.

Now the veteran forward is looking for a new home in free agency and Golden State could be a solid destination for him as they are in desperate need of another solid scorer and defender off their bench.

Despite this, the Warriors have been linked to many players this summer which could cause them to sign other players outside of Martin.
