NFL teams had to cut down their rosters to 53 men on Tuesday afternoon. Here is how the Falcons are set to open their season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Falcons waived Easton Stick, who could return to the practice squad as QB3, but hopefully, there’s never a situation where he has to see the active roster.
Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier are the best one-two punch at the running back position. They’ll get the bulk of the carries, but undrafted free agent Nathan Carter deserves some praise for his work in the preseason, which earned him a spot on the final 53-man roster.
It was a tough competition throughout between the wide receivers. Chris Blair and Nick Nash both made some plays during the preseason, but the Falcons had a lot of depth at the position. It’s possible that both of them stick around on the practice squad.
Somehow, Feleipe Franks made his way back to Atlanta, and he made the roster! His transition to tight end has lasted a lot longer than most initially expected, so some praise must be given as the Falcons opt to keep four tight ends.
This has quickly become a dangerously thin-looking group after the injuries to Kaleb McGary and Storm Norton. As of now, it looks like Elijah Wilkinson will step in as the Falcons’ starting right tackle, but the team did acquire Michael Jerrell via trade on Tuesday. We’ll see what happens when, or if, he’s added to the active roster.
The Falcons are going to be relying on Brandon Dorlus, Ruke Orhorhoro, and Zach Harrison a lot this season, which is exciting but also slightly terrifying, given their lack of experience.
Probably the most exciting edge group the Falcons have had in quite some time, headlined by the star of training camp — rookie James Pearce Jr.
With Troy Andersen beginning the season on the PUP list, the Falcons better hope Kaden Elliss and Divine Deablo stay healthy, because the depth behind them is very worrisome.
The Falcons chose to waive undrafted free agent Cobee Bryant in hopes that he will land on the practice squad. Outside of that, there weren’t any surprises with this group. It will be interesting to see if Natrone Brooks can carve out a role for himself after a magnificent preseason.
The Falcons’ decision to cut Jordan Fuller was one of the most shocking, but it shows the kind of faith they have in their youth. It looks like third-round pick Xavier Watts could be starting next to Jessie Bates III to begin the season.
Younghoe Koo wins the kicking battle between Lenny Krieg, but the Falcons are hoping Krieg clears waivers and lands on the practice squad. He was very impressive throughout training camp and the preseason.
