The world sadly lost former head coach Lou Holtz on Wednesday, who passed at the age of 89. Aside from his achievements on the football field, many of his famous quotes and saying will continue to live on. Here are a few that should be remembered.

“Life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you respond to it.”

“It is not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it.”

“The man who complains about the way the ball bounces is likely the one who dropped it.”

“Never tell your problems to anyone… 20% don’t care and the other 80% are glad you have them.”

“Winners and losers aren’t born, they are the products of how they think.”

“If what you did yesterday seems big, you haven’t done anything today.”

“It’s not complicated. It’s a few simple rules: just do what’s right, do the best you can, and show people you care.”

“For those who know Notre Dame, no explanation is necessary. For those who don’t, no explanation will suffice.”

“Coaching is nothing more than eliminating mistakes before you get fired.”

“Winners embrace hard work. They love the discipline of it, the trade-off they’re making to win. Losers, on the other hand, see it as punishment. And that’s the difference.”

“When all is said and done, more is said than done.”

Holtz’s coaching career included stops at four schools, but most notably Notre Dame, where he led the Irish to the 1988 National Championship. He then worked as an analyst for ESPN. A Mass is scheduled to take place at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame.
